Mary Leakey (1915-1996), one of the foremost archaeologists of the 20th century, had this advise for others in her field, "You know, you only find what you are looking for."
(a) If her advice is true, detail the steps archaeologists can do prior to excavating a site to know what they are looking for.
(b) If people are unaware of the historical clues left behind, how will they ever find them?

Imagine that you were accompanying the Leakeys when they discovered the trail of the 3.8 million year old footprints. Describe your reaction upon seeing the footprints. To whom did you think they belonged? How did your reaction change when you learned the age of the footprints? Describe how you think the footprints were made.
